"Maul-i"

Films: Up from the Depths (1979)

Alias: None

Type: Ancient

Location: Ocean

Height/Weight: That of a large speedboat.

Affiliation: Neutral

Summary: The Jaws rip-offs keep coming, and this one is really pushing the envelope. Plot's practically the same, but hey, our monster isn't quite a shark, right?

History: After some earthquakes rumble up the island of Maui, an ancient predatory fish is awakened, and begins chowing down on the tourists. It isn't long before folks are out trying to kill the beast, and doing a lousy job doing it.

Notable Kills: Nothing special.

Final Fate: The beast is finally killed when it is fed an explosive. We don't see the bloody remains, but the kill is indeed confirmed.

Powers/Abilities: Capable of reducing most ocean-bound structures to splinters with its head, hard hide.

Weakness: Explosives.

Scariness Factor: 3.5-We barely see this thing most of the time, but when we do, it's pretty alright. It's especially effective underwater, where it charges and kills swimmers at incredible speed. What else can we say? Your vacation is about to end.

Trivia: -Based on looks alone, this creature seems to resemble a particularly vicious Hyneria, a Devonian predatory fish that used to live in Pennsylvania.

-According to those who made this film, pushing the monster prop around was a nightmare. It was like trying to move a brick wall underwater at a contrived pace.
